Biofuel Evolution is a cleantech, smart energy start-up built on the blockchain turning mixed food waste into clean, localised and decentralised bioenergy.

We have teamed up with Low Volume Buying and Design Ltd (based in Coventry) and London Southbank University to create a working prototype which converts mixed food waste into advanced bioethanol – a clean and greener fuel.

Advanced bioethanol can be utilised as a stand-alone liquid biofuel to power vehicles, heat buildings of various sizes or alternatively it can be used as a clinical cleaning solvent.

Current Biofuel Landscape

The current generation of biofuel requires large arable spaces to produce the non-edible crops (for example corn, sugar beet and palm oil), in order to create the fuel.

Biofuel Evolution will not have that hindrance because it can utilise almost any kind of organic food waste to distil into fuel.

From the customer’s point of view, BeBlock will be capable of generating a sufficient amount of fuel to power an on-site fuel cell, reducing energy bills in the process, and potentially create enough electricity to either sell back onto the grid or directly to their neighbours via a Peer-2-Peer (P2P) network on a custom designed blockchain platform securely, transparently and in real-time.

Customers will also potentially be able to fuel bioethanol heaters, decreasing their heating expenses and decarbonising heat as a result.

Waste Reduction

Around 50% of all food produced on the planet never gets eaten.

In the UK, 40% of food waste ends up in a landfill.

Annually, in the UK, nearly 15 million tonnes of food waste is generated.

Methane from landfill waste is 21 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

The UK estimates 4.6m tonnes (worth £7.5bn per year) of food and drink is wasted annually.

Waste disposal costs are estimated to be between £115m to £200m per year.

If approximately 1.4 million tonnes of avoidable food waste was prevented in the UK there could be a monumental saving to taxpayers on their waste disposal costs ranging between £80m and £270m per year.

We will be combining our unit with a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) which can be fuelled by advanced bioethanol generating clean electricity, heat and water to power buildings of various sizes.

Our initial focus will be on above-average power users such as airports, hospitals, office blocks and sports stadiums (B2B) with a secondary focus on residential buildings and communities (B2C).

What makes BeBlock unique is the fact that it produces a liquid biofuel – as opposed to animal feed, biogas, compost or fertiliser – making it an accessible, affordable and localised source of clean energy and fuel.

Going forward, we are looking to develop a customised blockchain platform that will allow our users to buy, sell or trade their bioenergy (either back to the grid network or directly to their neighbours) on a P2P network securely, transparently and in real-time.
